Tom,
Sorry for the delay in responding!
You can read about the STC Webinars here: https://stc.webex.com/stc/mywebex/default.php?Rnd5840=0.12882063018204842

They cost $99 for members, $149 for non-members. They are delivered via WebEx, which I think is a great tool/service/communication method. WebEx allows you to record, but STC did not choose to go that route. So reusability is a plus for podcasting.

STC did make some podcasts of presentations at the Las Vegas conference, but very few. The advantage of the Webinar is that you have visuals. That's the downside of podcasting in my mind. But videocasting (one word or two?) provides the best of both worlds. That's why it was so exciting to see Google buy You Tube.

We had 41 connections to my Webinar, but I know that at many locations more than one person tuned in. For pubs groups of more than 1, a Webinar is a nice value and a good team experience.

You can interview me anytime! I'd love to do a podcast for you on blogging.

By the way, Holly. I really think your president's blog is the way to go. You're the only other chapter president I know by name -- and it's because of the visibility and exposure of your blog. I do read it pretty often, even if I don't comment on it. Keep it up.

Holly,

Thanks for promoting the Tech Writer Voices podcast. I really appreciate you getting the word out. One time I posted to techwr-l to let others know of a new podcast, and the moderator blocked it because he felt it was an ad.

Podcasting has tremendous power and potential, and I'll be adding a couple more podcasts to it this weekend, including one from India I hope.

Your webinar sounds interesting. I'm curious about the STC's use of webinars. How many people attended the webinar? What was the cost? Did you offer live Q&A?

I'm curious because the STC uses webinars as a form of communication to its members, but doesn't yet recognize the value of podcasting. Mainly I believe they use webinars as fundraisers to generate revenue for SIGs. I've been told SIGs can make $1200-1500 from a webinar.

Do you think podcasts will replace webinars? Can podcasts generate equivalent money from sponsors and advertisers? If 1,000 people pay $1 over a period of 3 months to listen to a podcast, rather than $10 people who pay $100 to listen to a webinar immediately, would this model replace webinars?

Was your webinar recorded? I'm really curious about your thoughts on podcasting versus webinars.

By the way, when can I interview you for a podcast on blogging?

Hi, Tom,
Just wanted to let you know that I plugged your blog today in my STC Webinar. (you owe me, dude!)

Seriously, my topic was "Ten Ways Technical Communicators Can Increase Their Value" and I talked about the potential of podcasting, videocasting, blogs, etc.

I also plugged the PhotoShop Guys because it's such a cool concept and exactly what some energetic tech comm folks could be doing at a whole number of companies.

Hope you are well!
