Trying to Create Tech Writer Voices Logo

I’ve been trying to create a logo for Tech Writer Voices, but I’m not a graphic artist, so my logo looks pretty amateur.
My idea is to have something like this:
The above image comes from someone’s Flickr stream.
But instead of the RSS logo, I thought I’d put in a globe. So I loaded Google Earth, captured a globe image, and then inserted it into some headphones that I got off of Microsoft clipart.
My idea behind using the globe is to emphasize the global nature of the technical writing community. So far, on Tech Writer Voices I’ve interviewed writers in Australia, India, South Korea, Canada, and the U.S. Listeners are also global.
The logo still doesn’t emphasize the technical writer aspect of Tech Writer Voices. What icon symbolizes the technical writer? The old pencil might have once been the symbol of our trade, but I haven’t used a pencil regularly for years.
Any ideas? If you have thoughts for the logo, please let me know. I want the image to communicate the focus of the podcast.

I like your logo a lot, actually. I don’t think you need to add a visual element for “tech writer” — it’s already communicated by the words themselves, and if you load up the logo with too many images it’s just going to get confusing. Try finding a strong font for the text, maybe place the words under the globe (Tech Writer / Voices, with “Voices” wider so it aligns with “Tech Writer”), and I think you’ll have a fabulous little logo.
I like your idea as well. You might want to think about simplifying the color scheme a bit and just do a translucent globe with headphones, just an idea. The idea is a very elegant visual metaphor for your global user base. Well done.w
Thanks for the comments on the logo! I agree with both of your suggestions and will try to implement them to see how it looks.
I agree with Beth about moving the words under the globe. It is top-heavy right now. Could you try a better contrast than blue and black? Perhaps you can try viewing it in black-and-white just to see what the two colors look like there. Otherwise, your words can “disappear” into the black. I just think the color scheme needs to be lightened a bit. Aaron has useful suggestions in that direction, too. The concept of globe and earphones is just fine.
