I started answering here, but it got pretty long. I've been wanting to talk about his on my blog anyway, so have a look at this post. Thanks for the inspiration to write it down!

When you say your idea of work started changing dramatically around September-October, do you mean you became inundated with projects and other tasks at work, or that you underwent a philosophical/conceptual shift in the way you perceive work?

Well, like you, I started thinking about other formats. So when work got busy and the holidays came around I had a hard time motivating myself to continue--I kind of felt like I was running dry on interesting, new interview ideas. Now I've been stopped so long I have to convince myself that I don't need to have a GREAT comeback to make up for stopping. :-) I just need to record something.

Another thing, though, is that my idea of work started changing pretty dramatically around September-October. I want to talk about that, but I need to figure out how to get started.

How cool to get a comment from you, Harry. I've listened to most of your podcasts. I see that the activity pretty much stopped in the middle of October. I enjoyed the interviews and podcasts you did. Was there any reason you stopped?

I like your advice about how we act differently in different situations. So very true. You have good insight.

People have more than one self, in the sense that we let different sides of our personality out in different situations, and when we interact with different types of people. Are you being false or inauthentic when you talk with your boss as opposed to when you talk with your family? Presenting a podcast is just revealing another side of your personality. And personality is not entirely genetic--we learned how to act appropriately in various situations, and our personalities reflect this social conditioning. So if you find that you naturally want to express yourself differently in a podcast then you do in any other activity, go for it! But be prepared for a period of adjustment as you work it out--it took years for me to learn to behave differently at work than I did in school, and I'm still working on it.

Clyde,

Thanks for commenting.

"we are oddly comforted by hearing other people rant as it proves we are not alone in the way we feel."

So true! I hadn't thought about it in this light.

Re animation, my wife may have been teasing me more than anything else. But after you listen to it, let me know if it sounded like me or not. You are probably one of the few who actually know me in person and "in voice."

I'll keep your suggestions in mind for the next podcast.

Tom,

I think the question that must be answered here is what results are you after.

People identify with each other based on common interests and experiences. Since most all of us experience frustrations, we are oddly comforted by hearing other people rant as it proves we are not alone in the way we feel. So, since frustration is a regular part of our lives, many of your listeners may feel a closer connection with you if you used the podcast to let off the occasional bit of steam.

Now, the flip side of that brings up your issue of being authentic. If you rant and that's not what you are really feeling, then it won't come off as being genuine. It will only sound like a planned event.

If you want to be "real" and allow people to know you as you really are, you simply need to stop putting so much thought into what you're saying or how you're saying it and just SAY IT!

I have not listened to the new podcast as I write this but I can tell you that if your wife indicated you were acting "animated" then it won't sound like you because, frankly, that's not you. The podcasts I've listened to up to this point (and the posts I've read on this blog) really do "sound" like the Tom that I've come to know.

I know it's difficult sometimes to see or hear yourself as you really are. So maybe the real Tom comes off sounding happier than some may prefer. Maybe that means that some people may not like the podcasts or the blog. But you said it yourself, you are happy with your family, happy with your job, and happy with your life. That's the authentic Tom. Enjoy being that guy and your listeners will respond.
