Tom,

Skype clarity will depend largely on your internet connection. Call quality is affected by bandwidth.

For your own voice, it will also be affected by the quality of the microphone and preamp/interface you are using going into your computer.

The more you can do to improve the sound going into skype, the better your recording will sound.

Also look into adjusting the format that Pamela uses to record the file.

Thanks for the feedback, Jason. I really enjoy your podcast. When I was first starting out, listening to the Podcast Underground was instrumental in helping me get things straight. It still is helpful.

On another note, do you have any tips for getting clearer Skype calls? I'm currently using Pamela for Skype, but I've noticed that it's not quite as clear as Leo Laporte's TWIT (he also also uses Skype).

I find that interviewing experts is the easiest way to generate content for my podcast. If I had to research all the material myself each time, it would be a lot more time consuming.

By the way, stay tuned to Tech Writer Voices (www.techwritervoices.com). This week we're publishing a special edition devoted specifically to blogging and podcasting.

I've also tried listening to podcasts while working and have experienced the same frustrations you mentioned. However, listening while driving is probably the easiest and most convenient time for me. For example, right now I'm planning to download about 2 hrs worth of podcasts so that I can listen to them while driving tomorrow morning. In case you don't have one, all you need to listen to podcasts in the car is an FM transmitter. It plugs into your cigarette lighter and plays wirelessly through your radio.

Podcasts also require some active listening. At work, I sometimes listen to podcasts but I find that I miss a lot of information because I'm not really paying attention. With music it's ok to tune out for a while but with a podcast you end up saying, "Wait... what?" and having to rewind, only to do the same thing again three minutes later.

If it were easier to listen to podcasts in my car when I'm more of a captive audience, I'd probably be listening to them more often. But as it is, if I'm working or doing something else, it's pretty much a lost cause.

Thanks, Tom, for blogging about my podcast episode. You make some excellent points. I know there have been times that I had podcasts I wanted to listen to, but because the stuff I tent to listen to is info-heavy and business related (and I just want to relax) something mindless wins out.

We all consume content in different ways. Which is why as publishers we should make it as easy as possible for people to find and consume our stuff in whatever way is most convenient for them. Your suggestions for fixing podcasting are spot on when it comes to doing this.
