Tom, I just stumbled on this post so perfect for my audience of Documentation Managers in the Boston area, so I pointed to it on my blog. www.clearpnt.com
I own a placement firm that specializes in Information design and development professionals. How to get user feedback is a hot topic and these tips are spot on. Thanks!

Hi, The ten points you have mentioned are very useful for every technical writer. I have a question for you. I wonder whether all writers like me can use these points effectively or not while preparing help guide. My concern is that I am currently creating online help for a client and the client delivers this online help to its users or audiences. The client in fact makes the direct contact with the users, hence he receives the feedback directly from them. For me, it is really difficult to learn the real concerns and troubles of the users, leaving little scope for me to address their concerns. Any suggestion?

This is probably your best post yet. It provides concrete examples and code one can use to increase the usability of online help.

Though, if I'm answering user questions at 9 pm I would want to be paid more! :)

Hi,

It's interesting how you mention point #1, as our IT department sends out an autoresponder e-mail to staff that had to ask for their help. This e-mail has a survey link, which allows the user to let the IT department know what they did right and where they can improve.

Thanks,

Richard Rinyai

Thankyou for posting the top-ten list(s)-i have been covering the exact same material in a technical writing course focusing on document design. Having these tips at my disposal caused me to sound much more articulate in class. I reviewed them on my pda 10 min before class started. Thanks again for boosting my confidence in an itimidating class.
