Thank you so much for sharing your experience of the STC conference. I'm a new STC member and am lucky enough for an upcoming conference to be in my home town (Sacramento). After reading your experience, I'm really quite excited to attend! Thanks!

Bikkies is the short form for biscuits, and I mean biscuits in the Aussie sense, not the American sense (pretty much synonymous with cookies). It is my aim to introduce American (and any other non-Aussies) Technical Communicators to as much Aussie slang as I can. :)

Kirsty, it was fun meeting you at the conference. I agree that disciples is probably too strong of a word. I had several people tell me they were a "fan" of my blog, but in my mind, fan has a whole spectrum of interpretation. I'm a fan of a lot of different things.

I've never heard the word "bikkies" before. You've got my curiosity up.

I've been thinking a bit about how you kinda described me (as one of Jane's blog's disciples!), and I don't think I am. Avid fan girl, yes. Frequent commenter, yes. But I also consider Jane a friend. A friend in one of those wonderful ways that I can't even begin to imagine how we might have met and if we'd even like each other if we hadn't met through the interwebs.
So, I considered the gifts I happened to bring with me presents for a friend & her family, not really sacrifices or offerings. ;)

I'd also say that your blog has devoted followers. I don't know what you might need to change for your blog followers to bring chocolate bikkies to you though ... :)

You said, "I talked ... to Alan Porter about his book, the History of the Illustrated James Bond (and how James Bond relates perfectly to technical communicators)."

You can't leave it there. I won't let you. Grin. My wife and I are James Bond fans, and I work as a technical writer. Fill me in, if you can, about how James Bond relates to technical communicators.

Go ahead and think about it if you need to. I'll wait.

Information about Chris and the abstract about the talk she'll be doing are on http://www.technicalcommunicationuk.com/index.php?/programme.html

There's no URL there for more information, though. I'll update here if I can find out there's anything published about this research yet.

Thanks for the tip. I'll check out Chris' research and see if I can apply it to improve my presentation style. If you can point me to a specific link, please do.

Char, as Robert said, I did get to review about 20 different submissions (because another reviewer backed out at the last minute). Really interesting. It amazes me how many qualified, engaging topics get cut simply because there aren't enough slots. I bet chapter program coordinators around the globe would be interested to see so many topic proposals and presenter bios.
