		<description>I am one of those customers that enjoys free stuff. I think the reason people wouldn&#039;t want to or are not quick to buy something online is because they are afraid they could get scammed as they have no control. So people need that &quot;Free&quot; trial just as proof that it will work.</description>

An advanced ways of getting money from web include such ideas as paid pro-versions, very small amount of payed products, ability to pay as much as customer wish to pay, free accounts with additional payed options, payed accounts with free access to all options etc. The trick is that web users would like to get everything for free and they need to feel that they are still get everything for free. And what they pay for - they pay because it&#039;s their will. If web user can believe that he is paying for something because he wants to, and not because he has to, he will pay more gladly, even for things that are for free.</description>

Free business models work when there is: 

1. Low barrier to entry, eg making ringtones, wallpaper etc
2. Almost unlimited resources, eg web hosting

Free business models, imho, tend to suit companies that are racing to the bottom anyway, e.g. web host providers that provide little value add and shoddy customer service. 

But not quite when you have IP and/or a unique product offering that’s way in advance of your competitors. 

The irony of Chris Anderson’s argument is that you have to pay to buy his book about giving stuff away for free and, more than likely, pay to attend his conferences. 

To paraphrase (or mangle) George Orwell’s Animal Farm, “all business models may one day be Free, but some are more Free than others.”
