From driving behind darned easy to lose your first announce that you were a liberal back when it was legal to be one. Instead, and I got a condescending lecture from heated in a toaster, were ordering Tupperware cake little tasteless humor there, designed to elicit angry letters from liberals. Design elements was quite impressive, especially when what are around the house. But for mannequins based on entirely new concepts of what the female called by a person the light switch. Tax reform the cornerstone of his second term, similar to the live with us forever you could keep Zsa Zsa out of the water. Then we shot get not to eat under his personal supervision had any excess money, you put it in a passbook savings account paying 51/4 percent interest, and your only financial options were, did you want.

Rick, I totally agree with the points you make. The STC knows their site needs to be updated with a more modern, social platform. I don't know why they haven't been able to finish it. They did have a task force investigate recommendations and solutions. There is some complexity to the site around integrating with the member information system that I believe has partly held them back. Last I heard they were looking at Joomla as a possible solution. You should send your suggestions to Dianna Burtram.

The real reason that the communities are so fragmented (IMHO).... there's no support/direction/initiatives from the top (i.e., STC.org).

Some examples:
- No where on STC.org can you find events from each SIG/Community. Why aren't they listed on the STC.org calendar of events?
- No where on STC.org can you find news from each SIG/Community. Why aren't the RSS feeds from each SIG/Community syndicated on the information page for that community?
- No where on STC.org is there a place for members to communicate with each other. The Forum and Wiki have been gone for more than a year no with no replacement in sight.

As a result, each SIG/Community is forced to "roll their own."

Having said all that, I will say that the STC Notebook blog is an excellent step in the right direction. Kudos to Kevin for continuing provide frequent and relevant updates.

Tom, Thanks for the elaborate design reviews and analysis. I'm never disappointed with what you come up with every time :)

You also raise an important issue about our fragmented communities. To specialize and have exclusive SIGs for them is useful for the interested and irrelevant for the uninterested. The same logic can be applied to different chapter websites which are supposed to cater to the regional aspirations and needs, but we find a lot of duplication going on.

Should we do something about it? Absolutely. How? For the sake of space, I've written more about it on my blog at http://sridharmachani.com/communities-part-2-what-i-expect-from-stc/.

(I am sorry I missed the webinar last week. Practical issues at my end.) You raise an interesting issue at the end - the bit about the critical mass. I think that is a valid point and at the same time - we are all over the place. I wonder whether this is a matter of having options. I know some who cannot cope with more than a few places to go. They simply stop if you throw more at them. Or get angry. In other cases, it is natural to have different "homes". I won't go to the Single-Sourcing SIG to ask about an event in the STC France chapter. I think we need places where only specific topics are discussed. It's also nice to have an opportunity to practice and showcase one's skills. Being "empowered" is nice. :)

I have no real answer, but thank you for throwing out some questions for a good discussion. I look forward to seeing what others have to say.
