WordPress Tip: Embed a Video into a Post Using WordPress’s Auto-Embed Feature

    August 4th, 2010 | Posted in blog 9 Comments »

Yesterday a couple of people asked me how to embed videos into WordPress posts. Rather than copying the entire embed code that youtube provides, you can actually just insert the link to the video into your post. WordPress will then pull the video in. This is a feature called auto-embed.

    1. Tom,

Great tip. One thing I noticed though is that the video doesn’t appear in your RSS feed you insert it with the WP auto-embed feature.

Then again, that may not be a bad thing if you’re looking to drive traffic to your site.

HTML5 will also make it easier to embed videos but we’re still a ways off for that.

This tip was one of the best take-aways from your Introduction to WordPress webinar that I recently watched. The part I really loved wasn’t necessarily the auto-embedding, but that you can change the size in the Media section. My template is 600 pixels wide, but the video would always show up as only 400 pixels. This drove me crazy because I wanted it to be wider. Thank you for showing me how to fix it!

I noticed this on a client’s site. The trick worked fine for a YouTube video but a Vimeo link did not auto-embed.

I tried the above and everything seemed to be going fine, until I hit save or preview. Then, the video I just inserted and edited disappears, like I had never put it in. Any clue as to what may be causing this?

Make sure you have auto-embeds enabled in your Settings > Media screen. Then make sure you’re inserting it into the HTML view, not the Visual view of a new post. Finally, put the URL on its own line. It has to be from a video service provider like youtube that supports aoembeds.

      Tom,

Followed your cues to a Tee and still no success. Not sure why.

    6. Is there a way to embed for a non-YouTube video directly into a WordPress post?

I’m trying to do it for a video posted on the SEOmoz website. They do provide the embed code on their site, but no short URL.

You can always use the full EMBED code instead of the short code.

Just select the HTML tab in the Page/Post editor and paste in the embed code. DO NOT select the Visual editor again. That usually blows away any EMBED code you paste in.

      Cheers!

      Todd
