Visual Storytelling Guides: A New Deliverable in Technical Communication?

    October 12th, 2011 | 14 Comments »

    Visual Storytelling Guides

When I read books to my little girls (ages 5 and 7), the pictures combined with story provide a captivating experience. I’ve often thought that if I wanted to create documentation that people actually read, maybe I should integrate these two same elements: picture and story. I’m not entirely sure what a product would look like that integrates these two elements, because technical writing usually … more »

Familiarity Affects Preferences for Text or Video

    Familiarity and video

This weekend I had to replace the solenoid in my Frigidaire Gallery refrigerator. The solenoid controls the flow of water into the ice maker, among other things. I’m not a technician, so when I received the new solenoid and looked at the instructions, I was a little hesitant to do what the text said. I was supposed to actually cut off the nozzles at the … more »

With my recent reflections on long versus short text, a comment by Michael O’neil made me wonder whether the “reading to do” mode equated with DITA’s task type, and whether the “reading to learn” mode equated to DITA’s concept type. In researching this, I stumbled across a goldmine of an article on the History of DITA. The article (mostly by Bob Doyle) traces the evolution … more »

The Importance of Visual Communication, or How to Build a Dirt Sifter

Recently due to flooding in my window wells, I had to dig the wells deeper. I piled up the dirt and rocks around the outside, and then realized I needed to sift the dirt from the rocks because I wanted to put the rocks back in, but move the dirt elsewhere in my yard to re-slope it. To sift the dirt from the rocks, I … more »

This entry is part 13 of 19 in the series STC Summit in Dallas

Last week I attended the STC Summit in Dallas, as did about 700+ other people. Overall I thought the conference was as good as it has been for the last several years. Others said the conference was even better than past years. There’s a lot that is definitely working well with these conferences. Below are five things I felt went well at the STC Summit … more »

Why Tech Comm Professors Don’t Teach Video

    April 27th, 2010 | 2 Comments »

The other week, by invitation, I was at a Missouri State University Workshop for Teachers of Technical Writing. I presented about trends in technical communication and highlighted multimedia, particularly video, as an important trend. Near the end of my presentation, I asked the academic audience why so many teachers don’t require students to create video (e.g., screencasts, e-learning, video tutorials) as part of their help … more »

From Overlooked to Center Stage [5]

This entry is part 5 of 12 in the series From Overlooked to Center Stage

Catalyst 1: Audiovisual Role With the instability of contract renewal pending and the lack of housing in the desert, I switched jobs to a non-profit organization, the LDS Church, which had an agile environment and about 600 IT employees and was growing rapidly. They had already been coding an application for about six months and realized that they would need a professional technical writer to … more »
