“Tom Johnson: A Modern Day Technical Writer” — NIU Article

Tom Johnson: A Modern Day Technical Writer

"Tom Johnson: A Modern Day Technical Writer"

Alex Otil, a student at Northern Illinois University, recently interviewed me for an article titled Tom Johnson: A Modern Day Technical Writer. It’s a short article probably mainly of interest to students thinking of entering the field of technical writing. Students will also find the newsletter as a whole full of relevant information about entering technical writing.

By the way, the title of the article definitely deserves a follow-up from the opposite perspective — a spotlight of an ancient technical writer. (If you click the link to read the PDF, it’s the last article.)

Hi Tom, you mentioned ancient technical writers. I just happened to run across them studying ancient writing systems. Someone had to write all these clay tablets archeologists have found. After pondering this for a while, it occured to me that these ancient writers were our forebearers. The medium (clay) determined the parameters of their writing, but the content (mostly arcane stuff and propoganda) was king. And the professionals who did this work were the ancient technical writers. Take a look at my blog for the posting “The iCLAY found in Babylon!” at http://www.glennjlea.ca/blog/?p=106.

BTW, thanks for introducing me to WordPress. My site (just recently relaunched) is the result of your valuable advice given at the Vienna STC Conference.
